about

Here's two unfinished soundtracks from two unrelated Flash games senselessly cobbled together into one album!

Fig Hunter Online (FHO) was an ambitious tactical RPG with D&D-like character creation and progression. The intention was to allow players to create their own adventures which other players could play through using their own characters. I worked on it briefly in 2008, but the scope was too large and I abandoned it.

Chamaeleon was a simple platformer where you played as a comically bland lizard and collected magic crystals or something. You could pick up items with your Yoshi-like tongue to carry them around or eat them, which sometimes changed your colour and abilities. I worked on it very briefly in 2011 as something smaller than the stuff I usually tried to make, but didn't stick with it either.

I composed more of the soundtracks than I'd expect considering how little of each game was completed. I think these were the first projects where I used different virtual instruments than the standard midi one, and restoring them exactly as they sounded at the time of composition for this album was tricky, so there are some minor artefacts in some tracks that maybe only I will even notice.

Most of the tracks were meant to be fairly generic so I and other players/quest creators could get a lot of use out of them; I suppose that's the biggest connection between these two soundtracks even if the games themselves had essentially nothing in common (other than being made by me).

My composition skills were moving away from my naive beginnings, though I still didn't know much about music theory here. I like how these pieces turned out though; I'm particularly fond of FHO - Forest and the level mood musics (Easy, Beautiful, Dangerous, Enchanted) from Chamaeleon, the latter two of which I never got a chance to use in-game. I'd say the Chamaeleon pieces are a bit more skillful since they were composed around 3 years after the FHO ones.

The two 'Theme About Figs' pieces are noteworthy. They weren't included in FHO, but were composed when I was in the same mental space. The Improvisation was the first time I ever really improvised on the piano, and I stored it in my keyboard's memory for whatever reason, then (I think?) played it back and translated it manually into this midi file, correcting any mistakes (I didn't have a MIDI input cable then; I do now). So this is as much a free flow of creativity as you can get! The Variations piece is a kind of revised and refined version of this composed more carefully. They're both use a strange modal scale - F acoustic/overtone or something - which I only realise analysing them here in the future. Gives an intriguing sound!

about

Tobias Cornwall UK

I'm a self-taught composer who's been at this since I was 15 (DOB Feb 1988). I mostly make indie games and the soundtracks for them, though I've also composed a bunch of non-game music for the joy of it.

My music uses MIDI soundfonts, and I compose in Sibelius. I'd describe it as 'idiosyncratic'! I seem to naturally use non-Ionian modes, with a particular preference for Mixolydian.
