about

Back in 2011, soon after I'd composed for MARDEK, I got thinking about composing an album for its own sake, rather than for the soundtrack of a game. I attempted this twice - one album I called 'Gentle', the other 'Minstrel's Quest' - though I never finished either to the degree I would have liked, or formally released them, because I didn't expect that anyone would be interested in my soft, idiosyncratic amateur music - so different to the harsher stuff that fills the charts - that wasn't linked to a direct remembered experience.

I still doubt that anyone would be interested, but it's nice to give the pieces a home at last, for my own satisfaction if nothing else.

The stuff I'm composing here in 2021 as I write this is very similar - though hopefully more skilled - so it's interesting looking back on the first relatively organised whimsical musical adventure I created.

The 'Gentle' pieces seem to have been composed in late December 2010. I think I uploaded them *somewhere*, though not as an album; I remember at least one person commenting on one of them. They were originally intended to be in this order:

Resplendent Breeze
Diamonds in Dark Snow
Scarlet Jig
Sunlit Moors

The 'Minstrel's Quest' pieces were composed a couple of months later, in early 2011. They're all piano pieces, essentially another attempt to do what I did with the 'Epic Quest' piece (included in Cambrian Explosion), but in separate pieces this time. They were also intended to be playable, unlike a lot of my earlier piano works, though I was never able to play them back when I wrote them. I tried them while compiling this album, thinking I could include the sheet music, but they're just awkward to play, so I didn't bother.

The Minstrel's theme occurs in all six pieces, and a couple of other themes recur too. The order was:

The Minstrel
The Forest
The Ruins
The Mirror
The Maiden
The Sword

I made the art on the day I uploaded this album (March 2021).

about

Tobias Cornwall UK

I'm a self-taught composer who's been at this since I was 15 (DOB Feb 1988). I mostly make indie games and the soundtracks for them, though I've also composed a bunch of non-game music for the joy of it.

My music uses MIDI soundfonts, and I compose in Sibelius. I'd describe it as 'idiosyncratic'! I seem to naturally use non-Ionian modes, with a particular preference for Mixolydian.
