about

A bunch of pieces for (midi-simulated) piano, from when I was a naive 18-year-old still figuring out how to make music without guidance. Like most of my early pieces, they're outpourings of free creative inspiration, unrestricted by such stifling barriers as knowing what the hell I was doing.

They were inspired by the Classical/Romantic-era music I was into at the time - several composers wrote sets of Nocturnes - though I didn't really know what exactly constituted a Nocturne, so they're sort of all over the place.

I seem to have composed them in four distinct sets, though the 3rd and 4th only have one piece each (my interest must have been redirected). The first set are mostly fairly short and simple, while the second are more elaborate. Four 'Diurnes' - the day equivalent of Nocturnes, I supposed - make up a fifth set. They're fairly frilly too.

A version of the fourth Diurne with more instruments was incorporated into MARDEK as the music in Aeropolis.

Like with some other old pieces, they were originally untitled (just "Nocturne 6" etc). These new evocative titles were added while uploading these, 15-ish years after their composition, based on what came to mind as I listened to them. One of the interesting things about music like this though is letting your mind run free and imagine whatever it will while listening to it; what you see would be different to what I saw!

I considered including sheet music, but they're not really comfortable or even possible to play, so I didn't bother.

about

Tobias Cornwall UK

I'm a self-taught composer who's been at this since I was 15 (DOB Feb 1988). I mostly make indie games and the soundtracks for them, though I've also composed a bunch of non-game music for the joy of it.

My music uses MIDI soundfonts, and I compose in Sibelius. I'd describe it as 'idiosyncratic'! I seem to naturally use non-Ionian modes, with a particular preference for Mixolydian.
